I'll Go Where I Choose
I’d been walking that day where the ‘roo grass was dry,
when an Eastern Brown Snake rose and hissed by my feet.
It denied me my right to continue on by,
and one terrified look made me realise why –
for another brown snake around this one entwined!
So I made my way backwards in hasty retreat,
for an Eastern Brown Snake with romance on its mind
is the touchiest critter that you’ll ever find.
When I reached open ground I gave in to “the shakes”,
simply shivered and shook in the mid-summer heat.
I’d survived an encounter with mating brown snakes
and I knew I was lucky – one strike’s all it takes.
Of course I still walk where there’s tall golden grasses,
I’ll go where I choose to . . . when “snake season” passes.
