Getting Through the House

Eyes meet across the conference board
an eyebrow's raised, to nodding head,
and thus we earn our daily bread…
each pen a freshly sharpened sword.
Now this is how the deals are made:
it's you help me so I'll help you,
flatter Joe and he'll help us too -
some backs are scratched, some debts repaid.
The issues never matter much
it's who is owed by whom, for what,
who's in the good books, or who's got
the pull, the clout, the golden touch.

And so another Bill is passed –
the House has let it through at last!
