Enchantment

The wild, sweet music woke me
and drew me from my bed
to open the casement window,
and all thoughts of sleeping then fled.

For in the moonlit garden
beneath a grey gum tree,
a man in shadow came forward
and held out his strong arms to me.

He smelled of woods and rivers,
he played the Pipes of Pan;
he smiled at me in the moonlight…
and that's when the magic began.

No mortal man that led me
to dance on frosted lawn
could weave such faerie enchantment...
we danced and we loved until dawn.

And then when morning found me
in bed with icy feet,
I smiled and thought on my dreaming…
and brushed the fresh grass from the sheet.
